hutch design

Below is a sample of a simple hutch/run design.

Features include:

bulletsloping roof with overhang to front and sides
bullethinged doors to front allowing easy access for cleaning
bulletbase of door to be 6cm deep to prevent bedding being kicked out!
bulletenclosed weatherproof area - approx 1/3 of hutch width
bulletrun beneath hutch connected by ramp (with grooves)
bullethinged roof to run can have either mesh or plywood covering
bullet6-10 cm base to opening door to prevent food etc spilling out
bulletno 'lip' on the front floors - for easy cleaning onto  a shovel

FRONT ELEVATION:

dimensions (not to scale): 5'wide x 2'deep x 2' high over run of 5' wide x 6' long.

SIDE ELEVATION (not to scale):

Note the roof overhang on the hutch above the run.  This is essential in wet weather.

Hutch dimensions: 5' x 2' x 2' over run of 5' wide x 6' long.  The hutch above the run provides some shelter for wet weather but, for a hutch used all year round, then additional side panels made from plywood should be added to provide shelter from wind and rain.

If your run is to be occupied by female bunnies, then it is essential to provide a mesh base using 1" gauge wire mesh.  This will allow your bunnies to trim your lawn without digging out!

The run roof could be hinged to open as illustrated in a smaller run but could be heavy and cumbersome for a 6' run or larger.  In these cases, we recommend fixing a flat plywood roof for the second third and making a hinged roof to cover the final third.

Notes:

Please use hinges, not pins, for the opening doors - pins create a 1" gap between door frames - in which paws or youngster's necks can become trapped.

Ensure any plywood is treated with a preservative which is safe for animals - such as Cuprinol Timbercare for internal wood and Cuprinol Ducksback for external wood.

Here is a manufactured hutch 6' long x 2' wide  x2' tall which is ideal for two dwarf lops

This is another well-designed hutch of 7' x 3' dimensions, with an overhanging roof.  It is occupied by two dwarf lops.
