| | Adopting Our Bunnies
We are not a large or impersonal
stud. Our rabbits are our family pets and we have been breeding for over
33 years during which time we have gained a lot of experience of these
delightful furry animals who have extended our family over the last three
decades.
If you are looking for a furry
friend as a companion pet rabbit, a bunny who will sit on your shoulder and lick
your ears, join you on the sofa to watch TV, bound across the garden to sit on
your knee, jump into bed with you to read (or chew!) the Sunday papers, go for
walks on a lead and harness and generally become a fully-fledged member of your
family/household, then look no further. You have found the bunnies you're
looking for!
However, if you are wanting a bunny
who will sit still and look pretty on a show table then it's probably better to
look elsewhere and contact a reputable show breeder instead. Our bunnies are companion pets
and want to be picked up, fussed, cuddled, become fully-fledged members of the
family - and be thoroughly spoiled rotten!
As our bunnies are our pets whom we have
lovingly reared and raised, the continued welfare of any babies available for
adoption is always our prime concern. We have invested a lot of time in
our furry mob and their litters and we want to ensure any babies who leave move
into the best homes possible as our continuing responsibility towards them.
For this reason we will ask you a few questions about your rabbit-owning
experience and how you plan to house and care for your bunnies. This is to
be certain that bunnies will be suitable pets for you and your household and
that your bunny ownership will be a mutually rewarding experience. We will
also strive to provide ongoing advice and support throughout the life-time of
bunnies adopted from us.
Unlike commercial breeders and some
show-breeders, we do not in-breed as this can lead to congenital defects which
can result in expensive and ongoing vet bills for treating or attempting to keep
congenital conditions under control.
We do not make any profits from the sale
of our surplus babies and any income is used as a small contribution towards the
care of our bunnies. Occasionally, when we have a spare hutch, we
will offer this to a needy bunny who requires either rescue and ongoing care or
rehoming. Only genuine cases will be considered. Previous rescue
bunnies have included a dwarf lop (Figwort) who had been kicked and hit with
sticks by his original owners, English Angora (Hattie) bought on impulse at a
country show then her owners couldn't cope with her grooming requirements, a matted and wasted-away
cashmere lop (Hyacinth), several mini lops, a french lop (Giles) bought from a
garden centre as a pet
for a 2 year old toddler - he arrived with a broken leg caused by mishandling.
Our
absolute star rescue-bunny was Penelope who was left to die in a tiny cage
no larger than an average pet carrier - read about her at Penelope's
Story. Some bunnies will be offered nursing care and eventually
re-homed (eg Figwort and Hyacinth) but most will spend their remaining
days/years here.
Our bunnies are not over-bred.
Generally, our Frenchies will have their first litter at 10-12 months of age,
two litters in their second year and one litter in their third year, following
which they retire gracefully to sun themselves in the garden or become an
animated hearth-rug in the lounge.
For your bunnies' safety and your peace of
mind, we are able to vaccinate bunnies against myxomatosis prior to
adoption and provide a Certificate of Vaccination, on request, at collection
time.
If you require it, then we can also
provide details of rabbit insurance to guard against any unexpected vet bills in
the future.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF
ADOPTION (sale)
All bunny adoptions are
subject to the following Terms and Conditions
 |
Rabbits for Children:
It is against the Law to sell any animal to a child. Therefore, all
adopters must be aged over 18. If the rabbits are to become children's
pets then the adoption must be made by a parent or legal guardian. Please
also read 'A Child's Pet' before
adopting to ensure that bunnies will be suitable pets for your entire household
- not just your children who might lose interest.
|
 |
Our bunnies are sold only as pets
(or, occasionally, for show) and on the express understanding that they
will not be used for breeding, unless this is agreed at the time of
reserving. We believe ourselves to be careful and responsible breeders
producing quality pets bred for temperament, character, personality and colour
rather than breeding indiscriminately (or ignorantly) purely for novelty value. If
you are considering breeding then we insist that you are knowledgeable and
experienced in caring for rabbits, rather than breeding simply for 'fun'.
We feel this is in the best interests of the rabbits and any resulting
youngsters. Please also see our Breeding
Ethics page.
|
 |
All outdoor bunnies should
have a companion. If you are
adopting a mixed-sex pair of bunnies (the best combination) then adoptions are
subject to the male being castrated upon reaching puberty to guard against
unplanned pregnancies or undesirable in-breeding. This is usually at 12-16
weeks of age but each bunny will develop at a different rate so you will need to
be vigilant and check at least every 2-3 days. We will always show you the
signs of puberty to look for in a male and most bunny-savvy vets will offer a
free pre-castration examination to confirm that your boy-bunny is sufficiently
developed to be castrated. We feel that it would be most irresponsible to
allow mixed-pairs to leave our home without such a policy. Most male
bunnies will be ready for castration between 12-18 weeks of age but if your vet
refuses to castrate under 6 months of age then we urge you to find a more
bunny-savvy veterinary surgeon.
|
 |
All bunny reservations are
subject to there being no losses within a litter. In the case of
illness/death of a youngster from the litter or the loss of either parent or any
other adverse event which might threaten the continuity of our lines, we reserve
the right to cancel any reservations made and immediately offer you a full
refund of any deposit paid or offer an alternative bunny from those available -
whichever option you prefer. This is our safeguard to ensure
we remain able to continue our lines - which is our prime objective underlying
our breeding programmes.
|
 |
Deposits paid will be refunded in
full in the case of death, illness, any health concerns or should a bunny be
accidentally mis-sexed prior to collection. We normally sex our babies at
birth and do so with 99.5% confidence. However, extremely
rarely a mistake might be made particularly in the case of males with a
condition known as hypospadius ('split penis') which can make them appear more
like females prior to puberty.
|
 |
Two weeks prior to the target
collection day we will normally be able to confirm your bunnies will be ready
for collection as planned or, if they are a little slower then we will suggest
the alternative collection dates as stated on your deposit receipt.
Six to ten days before the target/alternative (or other mutually agreed)
collection date, we will provide full feeding instructions, settling-in
information and detailed directions to our home. At this time, usually on
the Friday a week before collection weekend, we will also ask you to contact us
to make arrangements to collect your bunnies. If we haven't heard from you
by Tuesday then we will send a further reminder email and will also telephone
you (or send a text message) if you have provided us with the telephone number
we requested at reservation time. If we have still not heard from you 48
hours before your bunny's leaving day/weekend then we will assume you wish to
cancel and will begin to find a new home for your bunny/ies.
|
 |
Deposits are requested as a first
instalment and pledge of commitment that adopters will proceed with adoption of
the chosen bunny/ies. Once a deposit is paid then we will hold your chosen
bunny/ies for you until the target collection date range stated on your
Reservation Confirmation Receipt. Deposits are not refundable to adopters
who:-
 |
'change their mind' regarding
adopting
|
 |
fail to make collection
arrangements
|
 |
fail to arrive on the agreed
collection day
|
 |
cancel their reservation on a
bunny.
|
|
 |
Following weaning, the bunnies
must be collected promptly at a mutually-convenient date/time. We have
very limited space and regret we cannot hold bunnies for additional weeks unless
arrangements have been made in advance to do so. This is especially
important with male bunnies who must be separated to ensure they do not mate
with their mother or sisters!!
|
 |
We sex our baby bunnies with
99.5% confidence and will always show you how to sex your new bunny at
collection time and will confirm that your bunny is a boy or girl. If you
are unfamiliar with bunny 'bits' then we will also show you an adult male
so you will know the signs to look for if your boy is to be castrated.
Puberty can vary between 9 weeks - 5 months but is generally around 10-16 weeks
for a large breed male and 15-20 weeks for small breeds. At this time, the
gender differences will now be unmistakeable and it is only at this age that
sexing can be undertaken with 100% certainty. Prior to puberty, the gender
cannot be 100% guaranteed by any breeder.
|
 |
Having been given 'bouncing'
cheques which have left us severely out of pocket, we regret we must now insist
that all cheques are backed by a current guarantee card or allowed to clear
before your bunny (and any extras) can be collected. This policy has had
to be introduced since we are non-profit-making hobbyists only and, having
relied on trust with our bunny-friends, the bouncing cheques hit us hard and
caused much upset and disappointment. Where possible, we would prefer to
be paid in cash for bunnies/extras on collection day.
|
 |
Although, once a bunny has left
our care we cannot be responsible for him/her, we will always strive to help
with any future queries you may have and will always offer advice on care and
welfare. We can also offer advice on treating illnesses but this is
not a substitute for professional veterinary advice which must always be sought.
|
 |
We will ask about the type of
accommodation available for your new rabbits. If we feel this is
unsuitable, we reserve the right to refuse the adoption until appropriate
accommodation is available.
|
 |
We reserve the right to refuse an adoption
for any of our bunnies if we feel the the prospective adopter is unsuitable or
unable to properly properly care for them. Where this might cause
offence we feel it is more diplomatic to refuse the adoption without stating a
specific reason!
|
 |
Similarly, we reserve the right to refuse
or cancel any adoption without stating a reason if we feel this is in the best
interests of the rabbits concerned.
|
WARRANTY
 |
CONDITIONAL WARRANTY: We
care very deeply about our bunnies and all are health-checked several times
daily and again prior to collection and we won't let any leave unless we are
absolutely confident they are 100% fit and well. We request a
landline and mobile telephone number from all adopters and, in the case of any
illness or emergency, will notify you of this and keep you fully informed of
your bunny's condition, progress, response to veterinary treatment and
prognosis.
We would like to continue to
offer such an assurance to everyone who adopts from us so all our bunnies are
supplied with a conditional warranty.
If your bunny should become ill
within 48 hours of adoption with an illness which could have been incubating at
the time of adoption, then please return him/her to us immediately for any
treatment required. If you live too far away for this to be
practical, then please let us know of the illness as soon as possible and we
will advise on treatment - but a professional veterinary opinion will also be
necessary. If a bunny should die (we hope this will never
be the case) then please return him/her to us and we will offer you another
bunny of equal value from those we have available - or from a future litter, if
you prefer. We regret that, as non-profit-making hobbyists, we cannot give
refunds or reimburse vet bills.
Warranty Exclusions:
This warranty will be void where:
 |
there is evidence of neglect,
stress or abuse, |
 |
the bunny has been housed with
other animals |
 |
the illness or death is due to
accident or injury |
 |
our feeding instructions
have not been fully complied with (eg grass/fruit/veg has been offered to a
bunny unused to this) and/or the bunny has been fed on different mixes*
to those recommended/supplied. |
*
Please remember that young bunnies have very delicate
digestive systems and it is important that they do not have a sudden change of
diet since this can lead to health problems, usually starting with an attack of
diarrhoea. All of our bunnies leave with a starter bag of feed
together with very detailed settling-in and feeding instructions. We
strongly recommend you do not make any dietary changes for at least a month
following adoption and, if you must do so after this period, then please ensure
the changeover is gradual over a period of at least 10-14 days.
PLEASE NOTE:
Weaning date is
not necessarily the date the rabbits are ready to be collected. After
weaning, we separate mums from their litters so we can monitor them closely and
don't allow any rabbits to leave until they are a good size, eating well, plump
and healthy. Occasionally, but very rarely, we may need to hold a rabbit
until the age of 12-14 weeks to be absolutely confident. Our
bunnies' welfare is always of the utmost importance to us.
