local vets

Rabbits are usually classed as 'exotics' and not all veterinary surgeons have the necessary expertise to treat them for anything other than very minor and trivial conditions.

We very strongly recommend that you always visit vets who are experienced in treating and operating on rabbits and, if you're not sure, always ask how many rabbits they see per week, how many castration and spay operations they perform per month and, if possible, speak to other bunny owners and ask for their recommendations.

We can recommend the following veterinary practices and are confident they will be able to provide you and your bunnies with some of the best possible care:

Pets Barn Veterinary Centre and Animal Hospitals, Harts Barn Farm, Monmouth Road, Longhope, Gloucestershire, GL17 0QD.

Preferred Vet for rabbit treatment: Nick Horniman

Notes:  Three dedicated small animal care centres in Gloucestershire with vets who work with domestic pets only.  Vet nurses are fully qualified and experienced in small animal practice - while even the non-medical, reception staff own small furries and are happy to talk about their care!

Registered to the high standards of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association.

In addition to conventional vaccinations for rabbits, homeopathic (Nosode) vaccinations are available on request.  The surgery also has strong links with homeopathic vets, pet osteopaths, pet acupuncturists and other alternative therapies.

If surgery is required, then a wide range of anaesthetics are available, including Hypnorm (injection) and Iso-Flo (inhalational) - which are especially recommended for rabbits.

Personal observations:  a most impressive, friendly and professional,  first-rate service for rabbits by very helpful, rabbit-savvy Vet - with no 'aloofness'.  Thorough and comprehensive examination together with full explanations, rabbit education and advice throughout.  Very highly, and confidently, recommended by Ross Rabbits - especially for surgery.  We have only ever received most positive feedback from bunny-owners who have used these practices - which also have a high reputation amongst local pet supplies shops.

bulletSundean Veterinary Clinic 9-11 High Street, Lydney, Gloucestershire (opposite the Town Hall).  Tel  01594 840404

A relatively new, small animal veterinary surgery for domestic pets.  Open 7 days per week.

Personal observations:  This is a newer surgery in the centre of Lydney town.   Although its premises are smaller and tend to look more 'traditional', the surgery specialises in small domestic pets, including rabbits and has a good reputation. We visited the practice in July 2007 and found the vet nurse to be extremely bunny-savvy, the staff friendly and approachable and the vet we saw was very knowledgeable, offered a full, thorough examination of a  mystery bunny illness.  Like ourselves, she couldn't find any physical problem to account for our bunny's symptoms but offered to make a referral to a a UK bunny specialist.  A very fair and knowledgeable service at a reasonable price.
